OBSCENE EXTREME 2012

July sees one of my personal favorite festivals in Europe, OBSCENE EXTREME in Trutnov in the Czech republic , and we felt it was time to round up some questions and go looking for answers where they could be found without too much hustle (red: research ). So I contacted CURBY, the man behind OBSCENE EXTREME, and asked him a few questions.

We are getting close to the festival date now, how does it feel at this time?

I feel really good, busy as hell, but happy...I am watching every game of Euro 2012 so it's really busy time for me hahaha...but everything else goes well for the fest for sure!!!

What is it about OEF that makes this festival unique?

A few important things, mainly really die-hard musical fans, you can feel the passion in the air, it's not only about drinking as f*ck the whole weekend but also about music, exploring new bands, enjoying old legends of our music, buying records, supporting bands with buying their merchandise, sharing those killer live shows of the bands and so on...so people first, then also no barriers between a band and fans, they're both closer to each other and it just helps the atmosphere a lot as well... Stage diving of course!!! When you can do stage diving on a bigger festival, it's usually as if the band was caged on the stage. Horrible...

Surely an awesome thing is our unique festival area, The Battlefield is a real battlefield from 19^th century , a beautiful summer amphitheatre, lots of grass, woods, dark places, chill out areas...it's definitely not like airports in Germany...and also everything is so close, from the camp to the stage it's like 5 minutes, easy walking...same with city, downtown like 15 minutes walking...and I could continue...

If I am not mistaken, OEF is sort of your own big birthdayparty, is this correct? And if so... How did you come up with this idea?

Yes, true...of course it was my idea back then when I was young 25 years old dude, I had been thinking for a longer time that this world definitely needed a cool grindcore festival so I said, ok, I'll be 25 years next year, let's do a small party and invite my friends, from the Czech and abroad as well and let's have fun...I really wanted to do just a one-off festival, but reactions from both the bands and the crowd, were so fantastic that I had to continue...and I think every year it is just better...I just did some interviews in the Usa at the Maryland death fest recently and my grind hero Shane Embury said to me something like "It's possibly the best festival I have ever been" and it was said by a dude that played all the festivals all around the world...and it means a lot to me man!!!

Freak friendly? What does that mean?

We like all people, all different people, simply all freaks, being freak doesn't mean you're bad person...we have grindcore fans, crust, punk, death metal, whatever you know and actually no one gives a fuck who you are here...I really believe that being original and different is a big plus for this planet as well!!!

Yes, Freak fest!!! I had this in my mind for a couple of years and finally I made it a reality last year!!! I am really happy that guys and girls from Hell.cz helped me a lot with this event and they just made my ideas a reality!!! Actually it was really amazing last year, absolutely funny and a great day and a good starter for OEF!!! Most festivals have secure gates and photopits covering the stage, this is not the case at OEF, why is this?

I don't like it man...we don't have any bigger sponsors, our only and biggest sponsor is every supportive fan that buys a ticket and I really appreciate it and realise it all the time...I am always thinking about fans, I'm a fanatical and a very passionate music fan as well so I understand what's going on...OEF is not just like a great business plan, it's all about passion for music I love since I was a kid...so I have to ask why a distance between bands/fans?

Which band(s) are you looking forward to the most this year?

NASUM of course man!!! I saw them 4x in the Usa couple of weeks ago and they're simply awesome!!! And I guarantee NASUM at OEF will be absolutely different from any other NASUM reunion show!!! I am pretty sure that fans will make it unforgettable for them and for us all!!!  Also Californian EXHUMED, I have been waiting for their comeback to the OEF stage for 12 long years!!! So that gore metal attack will be very special!! DISCHARGE, of course!!! Simply the classic of d beat!!! ASPHYX, their new album "Deathhammer" is the best death metal album I have heard in a long, long time!!! ORIGIN are a great live band, CEPHALIC CARNAGE for the first time at OEF, also WOLFBRIGADE`s comeback to the OEF stage could be awesome, LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER, BLOCKHEADS and YACOEPSAE, 3 killer bands, then also smaller ones as COKE BUST (they played an amazing show at MDF this year!), CREATIVE WASTE, HUMAN SCUM, TOOLS OF THE TRADE and more!!! DEMISOR, a great band and the godfathers of Asian grindcore scene, man I saw them years ago live in Singapore and it was one of the best grindcore shows!  I could continue till the end of the list probably hahaha...

Just to humor us: why should people come to OEF this year?

I think I have said everything but if you're fan of grindcore, death metal, crust, hardcore, thrash then you simply have to go to Trutnov!!! If you want to do something different and unique then join us!!!
