Blind Gods and Revolutions

The fourth studio album from Italian trio Essenza, "Blind Gods and Revolutions" has a lot in common with the 80's European metal movement - evil guitar runs, pumping bass, steady pounding drums, and vocals from guitarist Carlo G. Rizzello that are a clearer, bluesy version of Dave Mustaine. Musically songs like "The Fury of the Ancient Witch" and "Fight for Change" have aspects of Mercyful Fate, Iron Maiden, and others in that harmonizing, old school metal mold. Conversely, "Seagulls in the Night" is more of a reflective, acoustic ballad that has some folk twinges.

The closer "Time (Keep My Memories Alive)" slinks back to those early Deep Purple/ Black Sabbath years, drummer Paolo Colazzo throwing down this easy going swing beat while the vocals and guitars parade around in a semi-doom, semi-bluesy state. This is an easy going effort that should gain appreciation from the older generation of metal mavens. "Blind Gods and Revolutions" has a lot of that classic charm and stupendous musical interplay, and will be cool to check out if you need that sonic stylistic kick.
