Pretty Maids Maid in Japan album cover.jpgThe Danish heavy metal legends known as Pretty Maids unleashed this great-looking CD/DVD combo via Frontiers Records a few weeks ago and what has been bestowed upon us is a strong, muscular, and above all potent and vital live document. The entire band chimes in with a powerful and energetic performance, and the entire thing is nicely produced in that there are dynamics and clarity as well as heaps of crunch and grit to the proceedings.

As its title so neatly suggests, this is a hard-hitting celebration of the classic “Future World” (1987) record and not surprisingly, they perform the LP in its entirety here along with plenty of other killer tracks. Vocalist Ronnie Atkins is on great form throughout, I love the suitably raw sound of the guitars, and the output certainly proves that Pretty Maids is still relevant and that these veterans are a splendid concert attraction. There is a strong sense of purpose and determination to the metal festivities here and these fifteen live renditions are delivered in a passionate manner and with a solid dose of class and aggression to them. The DVD is decently shot and takes you close to the action on stage, but as is often the case with these live DVDs, they are mostly fun to watch if you were there yourself that night and wish to have a souvenir of the experience. Still, it is great to see the band and the fans enjoy themselves. Some cool extra features including interviews and mini-documentaries are also included for good measure.

“Maid in Japan” is entertaining and a damn good time not to mention a glorious celebration of “Future World”. On top of that, it is one of the best-sounding and most exciting live albums released by Frontiers Records yet.
